Palatlakaha Environmental & Agricultural Reserve (PEAR)

The Lake County Conservation Council is working with the Lake Soil and Water Conservation District to create this innovative recreation and education facility off US 27, two miles south of SR 48 (south of Leesburg); turn right on University Avenue. The 263 acre site was formerly the location of IFAS (The Leesburg Field Lab of the University of Florida) but UF has consolidated its agricultural research operations elsewhere.  State Senator Anna Cowin and State Representative Everett Kelly have worked together in clearing the way for the land transfers that will make PEAR a reality.

The PEAR development committee sponsors occasional Open Houses at the site.  These events showcase the potential of this site which is both beautiful land along one of the few unchanneled stretches of the Palatlakaha River and an important piece of Florida’s agricultural history.

In 1999 the Lake County Conservation Council contributed $300 to the PEAR Committee to help in the creation of the Palatlakaha Environmental & Agricultural Reserve
